12 Week Fitness Program

Mary, Endurance Rider

I began riding in a focused way 2 years ago when I decided to pursue endurance riding.  I had so much to learn - how to ride, how to ride far, what kind of horse I should buy (I bought one), what kind of trailer I needed (got one of those too), what kind of truck would pull that trailer (done), how to care for my horse when traveling, what to bring to an endurance ride, how to train my horse so he will be fit, ready to go, and happy on the trails, etc. etc. As a beginner in every possible way, I thought I could help my horse partner if I were a fit rider. I stumbled on Sarah while watching a documentary on Race the Wild Coast. She was an inspiration. Then, somehow, I found out that Sarah was a fitness trainer and had a program called Ride LIke an Athlete. Sign me up! Working with Sarah has been amazing. She is an incredibly patient teacher who knows what it takes to be successful in endurance and other equestrian sports. The fit rider program course brought together a group of riders who were at all different spots in their careers. Guided by Sarah, we learned from one another and leaned on one another. We cheered each other on! I was recovering from an injury and Sarah adapted the program for me. I started building my fitness and was able to complete my first post-injury 25 mile LD feeling great. Since then, I've worked with Sarah one-on-one. Here is where I have gained the best sense of what I need to do to be strong. We crafted a personal fitness program together. It didn't stick for me. We refined it. I still wasn't doing it regularly (life kept getting in the way). Then, Sarah, always resolved to find a solution, asked me what I do consistently. Go to the barn, of course! So, she created a workout program for me at the barn! It uses lead ropes, mounting blocks, water buckets, etc. and I build my fitness while my horse looks on! Now this was something I could do and found it really fun. Sarah's program helped me to finish my first 50 mile ride with energy to spare. She also helped me to create a post-ride recovery plan and now we are crafting a plan for the remainder of the ride season. What other trainer can do that? Along the way, I ask questions about horse care and horse fitness too. Her words of wisdom are invaluable. Sarah is motivational, fun, talented, creative, and so very knowledgeable. I'm grateful to have her guide my fitness on my endurance journey!

Susy, Endurance Rider

"I joined Ride Like an Athlete in November 2022. At 50 years old I was pretty stuck and week in my body.
I started out by following the videos and stretching. I worked on being consistent through the month of December working towards the goal of 15 minutes of stretching daily. At this point I was not ready for any kind of real workout.
I started joining in on the live online classes with Sarah in January 2023. This is where I have made my gains. Sarah holds me accountable for doing the work and showing up to class. She has shown me many modifications to exercises so that I could accomplish them.
Now in March 2023, I am getting strong and flexible. I now can trim horses back to back without needing to rest. I have less nerve pain and numbness in my hands and arms after trimming.
Some of the exercises are becoming easy. My balance is getting better. Sarah continues to make our workouts harder so I can continue making gains. I have never stuck with an exercise program for this long in my entire life. Now I don’t think anyone could stop me!
I am looking forward to riding season. I am starting to feel like I can accomplish more of the things I have always wanted to do. My horses will no doubt be happier packing a stronger and more balanced rider.
